Woodwork Basics: Shelf Brackets

This 5-week course aims to teach you some basic joinery skills in the making of a pair of American Oak wall-shelf brackets for you eventually customize with your choice of shelf material. Metalwork Basics: Welding

Introducing the basics of welding, this evening course shows you how to use MIG and Arc Welding to make different types of welds, from fillet welds for joining right angled sections, butt welds for plate welding, and lap joints for overlapping metals. Using these three types of welds, you’ll have the opportunity to make a small metal coffee table combining all three techniques. Course Woodturning

You will be amazed at what is possible in just five hours even if you’ve never handled woodworking tools. At the end of this one-day course, even without any previous experience you will take home a beautifully finished hard wood bowl. Working two people to a lathe and starting with a blank of a wood such as Black American Walnut you will shape the bowl inside and out before applying a range of finishing techniques. Aluminium Casting

This 1 day course introduces you to the process of casting aluminium using a sand mould. You will be guided through each step in preparing the pattern, sifting and ramming up the sand and creating the sprue and vents ready for pouring. We will then fire up the foundry to melt aluminium at over 600ºC. Each student will pour their own molten metal from the glowing crucible using specialist lifting gear. A three week evening course in which you’ll learn to make a leather tool pouch for your own beloved tools or stationery. Mia Sabel and Colin Coutts from SABEL Saddlery will teach you the very basics of traditional saddlery, including leather preparation, hand-cutting, double hand-stitching and hand-burnishing. Over the course of the 3 evenings, you’ll test out these techniques, preparing, cutting, stitch-marking and hand-stitching to create your own tool pouch, with the optional branded Blackhorse Workshop logo.
