Bauhaus Centenary

November 2019
Partners: William Morris Gallery, London Borough of Culture 2019

2019 marked one hundred years since the Bauhaus – the ground-breaking German art school established by Walter Gropius. Celebrating the centenary, the William Morris Gallery presented an exhibition Pioneers: William Morris and the Bauhaus, which explored the relationship between the English Arts and Crafts movement and the Bauhaus. We were invited to partner with them and Waltham Forest Council to run design sessions for local secondary schools inspired by this new show.

The sessions provided practical making workshops exploring key metalworking processes and how these could be applied to the Bauhaus’ principles of ‘form follows function’ and designing ‘true to materials’.  Participants designed a series of simple tabletop forms exploring ways to develop their own material language and understanding of working with sheet metal.

Participating schools: Lammas, Willowfield, Eden Girls
