The Summer Season of Courses is Here

We have brand new courses for you this season, as well as all your favourites like the Woodturning Weekend and Welding.

The Hardwood Coffee Table course combines the Level 1 & 2 inductions with a course on machining beautiful locally sourced hardwood to create a fantastic coffee table featuring hairpin legs. You will choose your own timber from a selection and learn how to machine and smooth the wood using the thicknesser and planer, making  a table to suit your personal requirements.

Last season we introduced the Keepsake Box course taught by carpenter and studio resident, Liam Cooke. The first run of this course was a fast sell out so we are thrilled to run it again. This beautiful hardwood box takes you through various woodworking skills including hand planing, routing and spline joints. Don’t miss out on this.

Carving green wood with a drawknife on a shavehorse for a Greenwood bench course

Another new course this season is the Green Wood Bench, an introduction to the traditional craft of working with green timber. This very special course takes place over three days, starting with a day at London Green Wood at Hackney City Farm. Starting with splitting your fresh timber with an axe, you will then use a drawknife on the shave horse to make the legs for your bench.  Days 2 and 3 take you to Blackhorse Workshop where you will choose your hardwood to make your bench seat. In addition, we are very excited to announce that sustainable designer and maker Gareth Neal will join us after your course on Saturday to deliver a talk with a Q&A, based in East London, Gareth is a pioneer in contemporary British craft.

Melting pewter to pour into a mould on Pewter Casting course

Also back for summer is our Pewter Casting course, run by artist and metalworker Jacky Oliver. This course allows you to create a collection of small pewter jewellery pieces like pendants or rings. Cuttlebone casting is an ancient technique that has been used for centuries, you can carve into the soft side of the shell or use  an existing object to leave an imprint. Using a blowtorch to melt the pewter, you will then pour the molten liquid metal into the mould to create your casted object. Within minutes, the pewter solidifies, you can the remove your piece and prepare by removing any excess metal and polishing to a fine finish. A perfect course to make a unique jewellery piece that could become a family heirloom.

So why not make this a Summer of Making at Blackhorse Workshop, and discover all the courses we have to offer.
